There’s something about the end of summer that makes us appreciate home in a different way. It’s also a perfect moment to consider how luxury interior design can transform your space for the coming seasons.

That idea is at the heart of how I approach interior design. More and more, my clients want homes that provide a sense of escape from the pace of everyday life. And while we often associate that feeling with a beach house, country home or favorite vacation spot, I believe your primary residence can—and should—give you that same feeling.

A New Kind of Luxury

Luxury in interior design has become much more personal.

For me, a luxurious home isn’t the room you’re afraid to sit in. It’s the room everyone naturally gravitates toward.

It’s a beautifully upholstered sofa that’s genuinely comfortable, a dining room that makes you want to linger after dinner, or a bedroom that feels quiet and restorative. The materials may be exceptional and the details beautifully executed, but the finished space should never feel precious or untouchable.

The most successful interiors have an ease about them—they’re sophisticated, but they’re also meant to be lived in.

Creating a Sense of Place

Some of my favorite projects begin with the surroundings.

In the Hamptons, incredible natural light, water views and the relaxed rhythm of coastal living might influence the design. In Florida, the landscape and connection to the outdoors can inspire an entirely different palette. In a Manhattan apartment, that sense of retreat might come through softer textures, beautiful lighting and rooms that offer a respite from the energy of the city.

Great design doesn’t need to announce where you are. It should simply feel as though it belongs there.

That’s why I’m much more interested in interpreting a location than decorating around a theme.

Designed for the Way We Really Live

A home can be gorgeous in photographs and still not work particularly well in real life.

How people actually use a space is always part of my design process. Where does everyone sit when friends come over? Can guests easily move between the kitchen and living spaces? Does the dining room encourage people to linger? Does an outdoor area feel like a natural extension of the house?

When furniture is properly scaled, seating is generous, lighting is layered and rooms flow naturally into one another, you may not immediately recognize why the space feels so comfortable—you simply know that it does.

That’s where thoughtful residential interior design can completely change the experience of a home.

Bringing the Feeling of a Getaway Home

Think about a favorite hotel, resort or vacation home. Chances are, you remember more than how it looked—you remember how it made you feel.

Beautiful natural materials, comfortable fabrics, warm lighting, interesting textures, open views and inviting spaces for gathering all contribute to that feeling.

Those same ideas translate beautifully into luxury home design. Natural stone, warm woods, woven materials, linen, textured upholstery and layered rugs can create depth and warmth without making a room feel overly decorated. Thoughtful lighting can transform the mood throughout the day, while art, architectural details and outdoor views give a home its own distinct personality.

The goal isn’t to make your house look like a resort.

It’s to understand what makes a wonderful retreat feel so good and bring that same thoughtfulness home.
