The Southampton House
This house I designed in Southampton was a wonderful project to work on and it was unusual because the homeowner wanted to get rid of everything he had and completely start over with all new furnishings. Usually clients want to mix and match some existing pieces with new items but this was a great chance to create a complete, cohesive design from scratch!
The challenge was that they liked to entertain and they were accustomed to having a houseful of guests on weekends in the summer, and there were four kids, so that meant furniture that could withstand wet bathing suits, sand from the beach and the occasional spill from a soda can! In the living room I covered most of the furniture in outdoor fabrics, many of which are just as stylish, chic and soft as indoor fabrics.
I kept things in a muted palette of tan and white with lots of texture and some hits of green to keep it feeling fresh. In the master bedroom created the feel of a luxurious hotel room at a great resort, I wanted him to feel like being at home was the same as being on vacation. The icy blue, white and tan color scheme was crisp and gave it that Hamptons feel.
I had some fun with the kid’s rooms tailoring them to their personalities and using color to give them some energy.
Because they entertain so much I wanted the outdoor deck around the pool (which is huge!) to act as an outdoor living room so I created several different seating areas. I delineated the areas with outdoor bamboo rugs and mixed up the fabrics to give it a custom feel. There are places for people to eat, to lie out in the sun or just sit in a comfy spot and read a book…after all, isn’t that what entertaining in the summer is all about? |
